Amnesty releases Guantánamo Anniversary information pack
In advance of the sixth anniversary of the first transfers to the US detention centre at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to be marked on 11 January 2008, Amnesty International (AI) is releasing an information pack with key data and analysis regarding US illegal detentions. The pack includes information on the state of human rights in Guantánamo and its place in the wider network of illegal detentions and human rights abuses committed in the context of the “war on terror”.
The pack contains:
- List of AI's country and legal experts available for comment and interviews including in various languages and time zones.
- Key Facts and Figures on Guantánamo and other US illegal detentions.
- Timeline of key events related to Guantánamo and illegal detentions since January 2001.
- Briefing on conditions of detention in Guantánamo.
- Cleared for release -- stories of five of the 70 people that continue to be in Guantánamo despite having been cleared for release.
- AI’s action plan to close Guantánamo and end all illegal detentions.
- Amnesty International’s recommendations to other governments regarding illegal detentions.
