Writing for The Middle East in Europe

The following are intended to serve as general guidelines for new contributors to The Middle East in Europe magazine print as well online edition (meenet.info).

Photographic Materials

In the first instance please do not submit photographic material, unless you wish to offer a feature, via e-mail. Photos supplied over the Net cannot be used in the print edition, unless they are at least 300 dpi, but some may be suitable for use online.

Contributions are welcomed (on a wholly voluntary basis) from business executives and other key players in the corporate sector and, for the art and culture section, from curators, historians, journalists and readers provided such submissions satisfy these general guidelines, in content order:

• Letters to the Editor should be concise and topical and accompanied by name and address of writer (the latter for editorial record);

• Signed articles submitted for publication should invariably be original and not have been submitted elsewhere for publication. Pseudonyms, noms des plumes and made-up identities are not acceptable. Articles should be accompanied by illustrations, preferably copyright-free or with permission of owners.

• Diary and News items are welcomed as a general rule. If in doubt, please contact the editors.

• Corporate reports are welcomed from institutions provided they are written from an independent perspective, preferably contributed by individual/s who may not be connected in any manner with the individual or institution responsible for the commercial event.

Book previews and reviews are welcomed from individuals and institutions provided they are written by individual/s who may not be connected in any manner with the author/s being reviewed or with the institution/s responsible for the publication.

Suggested entries for listings online or in the print edition should be submitted only by the organising institutions, except when offered as a tip-off or in the context of another editorial submission.

Style

EAP periodicals have a worldwide readership base and subscribers comprise a broad spectrum -- from scholars to connoisseurs with varying knowledge of, or interest in, the historical, philosophical, practical or theoretical aspects of an art-related topic.

• Jargon should be avoided--especially where it concerns contemporary art!

• Diacritical marks are discouraged but every attempt is made to reproduce original characters and accents in Latin-script languages.

• In transliteration and place names, the most recent styles and spelling systems are observed. Exceptions may be made, as they are in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Urdu, etc, for personal preferences (name before surname, articles, etc) of people cited in texts, interviewees or authors.

• The s-suffix is preferred over Americanisms, the day precedes the month and year in dates, the numbers one to nine are written out, except in sums, e g, $1 million.

Format

The following general rules apply:

• Texts can be supplied by e-mail or PC or Mac floppy disks, by facsimile or post when the first two methods are unavailable. Maps, other graphics and line drawings can also be supplied in EPS or TIFF format.

• Illustrations. EAP accepts no responsibility whatsoever for illustrations (as indeed text) lost in mail or during dispatch by any other means. Illustrations are accepted on the basis that EAP will not incur any unauthorised copyright costs. Book reviewers should send the dust cover, or a photograph of the title page, while submitting a review for publication.

Where to Start

As the very first step, contributors should propose to the Editor what they wish to submit, send an abstract or a precise outline, and state terms under which they wish to contribute.
